Hill Head Youth Sailing Festival 12th September 2009

A gentle breeze and beautiful sunshine accompanied the RYA OnBoard celebration for all the children (non members) who had been introduced to the "Try sailing" at Hill Head in 2009.

The link community groups were Titchfield Sea Scouts; Titchfield Sea Cubs and Stubbington Scouts. We were joined by children from Spinnaker Sailing Club who had experienced inland sailing. Gosport Sea Scouts supported the event with Safety Boat Drivers, crews, a Safety Boat and youth helms. Solent University and Spinnaker provided extra safety Boats 91 children were on the water in 56 boats; 47 were 'OnBoard' kids; 44 were children helpers from Hill Head. There were 47 adult Hill Head volunteers with 6 RYA and Laser support staff. Altogether 143 were ready for the final barbecue.

Without doubt, this showed how well Hill Head supports our community links.

Said Mr Woodward:
It was, as you know, Sam's first experience of sailing. As a result of the day, he has become very enthusiastic about the sport and is very keen to continue to learn. The day was superbly well organised and the organisers and instructors were a credit to the sport and to the club. I was particularly impressed with how responsible and patient the young instructors were with the new kids. From my vantage point on the shore I could see that it was all conducted with a high degree of fun, enthusiasm and safety. A hugely enjoyable day all round.

Said Dr Knighton:
So many of the Club's young sailors turned up, taught and helped out on Saturday with great spirit and enthusiasm. I think the Club can be very proud of its youth and a lot of that is down to the way they have been taught and encouraged.
