Understanding your safety when going on the water
Signing on
Please sign on BEFORE each race and keep clear of the start line until the preceding class has started. For back to back races 1 signature is sufficient.
Safety Boats
A club safety boat will normally be on duty during organised racing.
If you choose to retire from a race you should inform the Race officer or safety boat crew who will inform the Race officer as soon as possible.
Disclaimer of Liability
Competitors participate in racing entirely at their own risk. See rule RRS 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority, Hill Head Sailing Club will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after Club racing.
Insurance
Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of £2,000,000.
Personal Buoyancy
All helmsmen and crew, AND CADETS must wear adequate personal buoyancy at all times.
Weather and local conditions
The apparent safety afforded by the shore during an offshore wind should be treated with caution, as this may not be a true guide to the conditions just offshore. The area to the west of the club at Rainbow bank gets particularly boisterous in a SW breeze especially with a west going tide. A prudent mariner would check this website's weather station and
Bramblenet for the current conditions and check the forecast weather at
Marine Call.
Recreational Sailing
Safety boat cover is available within the vicinity of the club race area
on all days covered by the fixture list. Members not racing should inform the race team of their intended sailing area, ETD/ETA. When Recreational sailing, but no club activity is planned, it is advisable to ensure details of your plan are provided to a trusted individual and you have the means to contact them or the coastguard should you come into difficulty or your plan change. This is for your own safety. If you do, leaving a launching trolley on the slipway during non-sailing days whilst away sailing; placing Name, Boat details ETD/ETA and intentions along with contact details in a clear plastic envelope attached to the trolley, (provided in club foyer) can help avoid un-necessary concern or initiate a directed search in the event of an accident.
Fishing Gear
This can be dangerous to you, your crew and will damage your boat. When fishing is taking place on the foreshore, approach with caution and treat such an area as an obstruction - RRS (Definitions and rule 19).
