1. Training Introduction
Hill Head is an RYA Accredited Training Centre, and offers a wide variety of structured courses and regular training sessions for members throughout the year. Training covers the core practical disciplines of sailing and power-boating, along with land-based First Aid and VHF courses.
Hill Head offers Taster Sailing Sessions throughout the year. These are not only for club members, but also for people who are not club members, but who wish to give sailing a go before deciding whether to join and have the full benefits of the Sailing Club.
If you are not a member and wish to do this then you need to contact
the RYA Training Principal first.
Hill Head Sailing Club continually invests in equipment to aid the training programme:
- 30+ club owned sailing dinghies
- 3 highly specified RIB safety craft
- 2 other displacement craft
- First Aid training equipment including Rescusi-Annies

Hill Head has a large fleet of Oppie dinghies, and has recently invested in the new RS Tera dinghy. We now have a fleet of 16 boats to teach the Youth Sailing Scheme levels 1-3, which enables younger members to gain experience without needing to invest in their own boat initially. Age and ability appropriate Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced sessions are offered five times each year during the club Oppie sessions and through the RS Tera squad. RYA Youth Stages are awarded based on performance and progression during the year. Click on the links below to find out more:

5. National Sailing Scheme Introduction
Hill Head owns a large fleet of dinghies (RS Tera, Pico, Topper, Mirror, Feva, Laser 2000, Wayfarer) appropriate for teaching most levels of the RYA National Sailing Scheme, from beginner level to race training and spinnaker handling levels. Members are encouraged to progress from beginner courses, to be competent to take the more advanced RYA courses, by joining adult squad sessions (dates available on the fixtures list) and participating in regular club sailing.
RYA National Sailing Scheme Introduction
The courses offered by Hill Head fall broadly into two groups; beginner or basic level courses, and more advanced courses covering race techniques, spinnaker handling or performance sailing.
6. National Sailing Scheme Beginner Course - (Basic or Beginner Courses)
Hill Head runs two high quality beginner courses each year; an RYA level 1/2 course at Easter, followed by an RYA Level 1/2 course in early summer. The courses are appropriate for those completely new to sailing, or for older members with lapsed skills.
For those wishing to take part in Level 1/2 courses, it should be understood that to reach a level greater level of competence in medium or stronger wind conditions in excess of Force 3, it is necessary to continue sailing and gaining skills after the course.

7. National Sailing Scheme Intermediate/Advanced Courses - (Gaining Skills and Experience)
The training team at Hill Head strongly believes in offering a training programme which allows members to gain experience, skills and confidence in coastal sailing and racing. To further this aim, a number of targeted training sessions are offered, structured around the RYA National Sailing Scheme Start Racing award. The sessions are targeted at specific age groups or classes to allow for the most appropriate teaching methods and style to be used.
The following courses are structured around the RYA Start Racing Award:
National Sailing Scheme Intermediate/Advanced Courses
- Junior squads: RS Tera, Topper, RS Feva and Mirror
- Adult Singlehanded Squad
- RYA Start racing course
In addition to the above three groups, Hill Head offer class specific race coaching for the Topper, Mirror, Feva, and Laser class. This class-based coaching covers as appropriate performance or spinnaker sailing, and is designed for members with an ability level of at least RYA Start Racing.
